Research Fellowships and Travel Grants
Students interested in applying for research fellowships and travel grants for this summer and the 2023-24 academic year should keep in mind the following deadlines.
Collège de France Research Fellowship
The University of Chicago’s Collège de France Exchange Fellowship is a new program to support one student for a year of doctoral research in Paris. This award provides: 1) a formal year-long affiliation with the Collège de France, 2) access to certain material and intellectual resources at the College de France, and 3) a financial package totaling $26,000 to support the fellow’s doctoral dissertation research.
This program has been on hiatus during the pandemic.
François Furet Travel Grant
Amount of Award: $2,500
Number of Awards: At least eight (8)
Eligibility: Students in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Professional Schools, or the College who wish to conduct research or pursue intensive language study in France
Deadline: For travel to France during the summer or fall of 2023. This application cycle, the deadline is April 30, 2023. (The application is available below, click “Apply Here”)

EHESS Exchange Fellowship
Amount of Award: Airfare, Registration Fees, Stipend of up to the euro equivalent of $12,000 for a stay of up to six months. For shorter stays of no less than three months, the stipend will be prorated
Housing: Possible access to subsidized housing through CROUS.
Number of Awards: One per year
Eligibility: Open to PhD candidates in the Division of the Social Sciences whose dissertation projects require study and research in Paris and who would benefit substantially from the resources of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.

Sciences Po Exchange Fellowship
Amount of Award: Airfare (up to $1500), a stipend paid in euros equivalent to $12,000 for 2 or 3 academic quarters. and an opportunity to teach a course in English based on PhD research
Number of Awards: One per year
Eligibility: Open to PhD candidates with a research project in an academic discipline represented at the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po)
Application Deadline: April 30, 2023.
Internship Support
The France Chicago Center works with various University partners to help make it possible for UChicago students to conduct summer internships through the following programs.
Summer Internships for Students at the Harris School of Public Policy
FCC provides $5000 awards to up to two (2) Harris School students who are accepted into summer internship positions in France. Contact Allison Foley, Senior Associate Director of Employer Partnerships at the Harris School of Public Policy, for more information.
Summer Internships for Students at the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice
FCC provides $4000 awards to at least one (1) Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice student who is accepted into a summer internship position in France, one of her oversees departments or terretories, or in a French-speaking country. Summer Internships for Students in the College
FCC provides supplemental support in the amount of $1000—above and beyond the amount ($5000) provided by the University—to up to three (3) students in the College who secure summer internships in France through the IOP/Metcalf Program. Interdisciplinary Workshop on Modern France and the Francophone World
The Interdisciplinary Workshop on Modern France and the Francophone World provides a forum for faculty and students from various departments in the social sciences and the humanities who share a common interest in France and the francophone world from the mid-seventeenth century to the present. By regularly bringing together different disciplinary perspectives and research horizons, we encourage participants to enrich the intellectual and methodological range of their own work. Presenters reflect the diversity of the group and include representatives from the fields of history, anthropology, literature, art history, music, sociology, political science, etc. Participants from all disciplines are welcome.
