An African Film Series – No Chains No Masters (2024)

Please join us for a free film screening and discussion as part of the U.S. premiere tour of Ni Chaînes Ni Maîtres [No Chains No Masters] (98 mins, 2024). The University of Chicago is among a handful of American universities selected to debut the film in the U.S.

This event will feature a screening of the film at 12pm on Tuesday February 4th (Cobb 307), as well as a later discussion and Q&A session with its director, Simon Moutaïrou, at 4.30pm (SSRB 201). The film will be in French with English subtitles. Simon Moutaïrou is a Franco-Beninese writer known for his work on Goliath and Black Box. No Chains No Masters marks his directorial debut and is the first feature film about slavery in the French empire in 35 years. Set in the former French colony of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, No Chains, No Masters follows Massamba, a father, and his teenage daughter Mati, who are determined to emancipate themselves from a colonial plantation.
