Dear Faculty Colleagues in France,
As you may know, in 2001 the French Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and the University of Chicago worked together to create
a Center whose primary mission is to promote and facilitate exchange,
debate, collaboration, and cooperation between University of Chicago
departments, divisions, and professional schools, and institutions of
research and higher education in France. In its short history, this
fondation, the France Chicago Center, has helped to foster many new
agreements and relationships,
and it is our desire to help create many more in the future.
If you or any of your colleagues are interested in
forging closer ties with the University of Chicago, and would like
assistance from the France Chicago Center, I'd like to suggest that you
proceed in the following way:
- Identify an appropriate interlocutor within the
University of Chicago. If you already have formal or informal contacts
with appropriate faculty members at the University of Chicago, it would
be most productive to contact them directly. If you know no such
individuals, feel free to contact the Assistant Director of the France
Chicago Center, Dan Bertsche (773-702-3662, fcc@uchicago.edu), who will be able
to suggest possible interlocutors and offer advice
on how they might most effectively be approached.
- Once you have found an appropriate contact,
feel free to initiate discussions with them about the kind of exchange
you envision. Be sure to mention that our Center can offer support to
certain kinds of "Franco-Chicago" initiatives. If the Chicago faculty
member with whom you are discussing is not familiar with the France
Chicago Center, do not hesitate to suggest that she or he contact us
directly. You may also wish
to direct them to our web site.
- Write and Submit a Proposal. Once a mutually
beneficial approach to exchange has been identified, you and your
partner at the University of Chicago should draft a proposal. The
proposal needn't be more than 600 words; however there should be a
complete budget. The proposal itself must be submitted electronically
by your Chicago faculty colleague.
Proposals requesting up to $5000 will be
considered, providing that they are received on or before the 16th of
January before the fiscal year in which the event will take place. (The
University of Chicago's fiscal year is July 1 through June 30). For
those projects received after January 16, or for proposals received
during the same fiscal year as the project, the France Chicago Center
usually limits its contribution to $1000. The France Chicago Center
will consider supporting a limited
number of high impact projects at a significantly higher level. For a
list of projects supported in the past please click here.
Thank you for your interest in the France Chicago
Center, and we look forward to hearing from you and your Chicago
colleagues.
Sincerely,
Robert Morrissey
Executive Director
France Chicago Center
